RWCB Welcomes Local Scouts for a Hands-On Look at Sustainable Manufacturing

Mar 18, 2026 | Press

A local Boy Scout troop recently visited Rand‑Whitney Containerboard (RWCB) for a behind‑the‑scenes tour of the paper mill, gaining a hands‑on learning experience tied to their Pulp and Paper merit badge.

During the visit, scouts toured the mill to see how recycled materials are transformed into linerboard used for packaging. Company representatives walked them through each step of the papermaking process, from breaking down recycled fiber to forming, drying, and finishing massive rolls of paper. The tour provided a firsthand look at large‑scale manufacturing while highlighting the importance of recycling and sustainability in the paper industry.

One of the day’s highlights was the opportunity for scouts to make their own paper. With guidance from mill staff, the scouts mixed pulp, formed sheets, and learned how fibers bond together to create paper. The activity reinforced key concepts from their merit badge requirements while offering a fun and memorable hands‑on experience.

RWCB has welcomed local scout groups in the past and values opportunities to educate youth about modern manufacturing and environmental responsibility. These visits not only support scouts’ progress toward earning merit badges but also spark curiosity about potential careers in science, engineering, and skilled trades.
